Victory! (almost)
Every day that I manage to stay out of a car I consider a small victory for myself. I just can't help but feel that being in a car, going to a destination, and not really enjoying the experience must suck a small part of your soul out. Today I thought I had succeeded-- I rollerskied to practice this morning since it we were meeting 10min from my house by rollerskiing, I biked to work (2miles), then biked down to the bowling alley (1mile) to join my Sand Lake students for part of their field trip, then back to work, then home, then for my afternoon workout I ran around kincaid from my house. Just as I started to congratulate myself on escaping the confines of my subaru for the day, I remembered that I drove some friends to the airport this morning. d'oh! Can before 8am drives count toward the previous day?
Tomorrow we're meeting down at Potter Marsh for practice so I'll be driving again, but Wednesday I get another honest chance at avoiding the car.

what about if you're driving and enjoying the experience? I think that should get you half points, or something. I mean, if you have to do it, may as well enjoy it, right?
Now this sounds like a good challenge - how many days of spring and summer can you entirely forgo a car? I can probably do it four or five days out of seven, which would mean, what, something like 75 days between now and October 1. Care to make any wagers?
alex- if it really is an enjoyable experience, take all the points you want. The driving around anchorage doesn't have much going for it though.
tassava- I'd keep track, it could be an interesting number. My guess is you would win since it seems to be the rare day that I don't drive somewhere. You had a counter up this winter for time spent outside, I recall, maybe we could each set up something like that?
I'd take part in that challenge. It is difficult for sure with training, but something we all should be aware of. If we can't stop driving, we should feel bad about it! How would you count carpooling? Or public transit?
Apu might think of using less helicopter time/gas too. Maybe hike UP AND DOWN to your glacier ski camp. You will get in better shape and save gas. Use the helicopter to only bring in supplies.
::SMILE::
Big smiles from RJ for this post.
Are you good at Excel sheets?
I would count helicopter rides as entertainment... NOT soul-sucking. We are talking about enjoying life here, not saving gas, that's another topic. Although it looks like we might actually be using your suggestion this summer... my training schedule has a "hike into glacier" written on it.
rj- this was one of the posts where I wanted to link to your blog but it was temporarily out of existence. (& I do know my way around an excel sheet.)
Actually, many people will claim that helicopters, with their noise that disturbs people and animals alike, suck the soul out of wilderness areas. Glad to hear you are hiking in.
